Gender Proud: A Facilitated Support Group for Trans and Gender Diverse People

A place where you can be yourself
By Linda Wall

The UK is less welcoming and less safe for trans and non-binary folk than it was a few years back. I don’t need to explain this statement: all of you who are reading it will know it to be true, and if you’re gender queer then you’ll probably have experienced it in some way.

This makes it more important than ever that we have our community, and we have our own spaces. Sahir’s Gender Proud groups are part of this fabric.

Gender Proud groups are as amazing and diverse as the trans community itself. Every group is unique. They’re populated by queer, funny, beautiful individuals of all ages, many with their own niche interests, perhaps some who are damaged or vulnerable. The character of the group is created by the people in the room. It could be serious, it could be quirky, it could be joyful. We could be discussing the Supreme Court judgement, or learning about Dungeons and Dragons. We could be supporting one of our own who’s going through a difficult time, or taking astrology readings.

The space is open and inclusive. All are made welcome, but there is no pressure or expectation: you can talk for Britain, or you can just be there. Above all, you can be yourself. You don’t have to pretend to be anyone else.

If you live in Merseyside, you’re probably not far from a Gender Proud group. We always love to see new faces. And we love the energy and life experiences that every new person brings, putting their own stamp on the group’s character.
